Tim Hildebrandt was born January 23, 1939, in Detroit, alongside his twin brother Greg. The two trained together at the Meinzinger Art School and began their professional partnership in 1959, animating training films for the auto industry and the military before relocating to New York in 1963.
Working jointly as the Brothers Hildebrandt, Tim and Greg became two of the defining artists of the fantasy genre's rise in American popular culture. Their Tolkien calendars for Ballantine Books (1976–1978) made them internationally known, and in 1977 they painted the original Star Wars theatrical poster. After a period apart in the 1980s, when Tim worked mainly on book covers, the brothers reunited in the mid-1990s to paint Marvel and DC superheroes together until Tim's death from diabetes on June 11, 2006. Greg continued painting solo until his own death on October 31, 2024.
