Ron Spears was born in 1960 in Tacoma, Washington, and earned a BA from the University of Puget Sound in 1988 before later completing an MFA in illustration at the University of Hartford in 2009. He began working with Magic: The Gathering in 1998 as art director for Urza's Saga, going on to direct or co-direct the art for every expansion from Urza's Saga through Odyssey.
Spears also illustrated widely for the Harry Potter Trading Card Game, Dungeons & Dragons, Upper Deck, and Blizzard Entertainment. He served as an Artist in Residence at Zion National Park in 2012, with resulting work featured at the Zion Human History Museum, and chaired the Illustration Department at the Savannah College of Art and Design from 2014 to 2023. He died on June 22, 2026.
