Romas

Romas Brandt Kukalis was born in Toronto in 1956 and raised in Connecticut, training at Paier College of Art in Hamden, from which he graduated in 1978. He began in comics, contributing to Creepy, Eerie, Heavy Metal, and Conan the Barbarian, before moving into paperback cover painting for Tower Books and Leisure Books.

Working as Romas, he became a prolific cover artist for speculative fiction, painting Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, Anne McCaffrey's The Rowan, and the Animorphs Chronicles, alongside seven card illustrations for Magic: The Gathering. He became a U.S. citizen in 1989.
