Greg Hildebrandt was born January 23, 1939, in Detroit, and trained alongside his twin brother Tim at the Meinzinger Art School before the two began working together in 1959, first animating industrial and military training films for the Jam Handy Organization. They moved to New York in 1963.
As the Brothers Hildebrandt, Greg and Tim are widely credited as founding figures of modern fantasy illustration. Their 1976–1978 Tolkien calendars for Ballantine Books sold over a million copies, and in 1977 they painted the original theatrical release poster for Star Wars. The brothers split to pursue solo careers in 1981, reunited through the 1990s to paint Marvel and DC characters, and worked together until Tim's death in 2006. Greg continued painting solo afterward and died on October 31, 2024, at age 85.
